Erin Entringer: The effects of misogynistic lyrics on music listeners: A qualitative study

Situated in a century where feminism and gender equality are progressing, this qualitative study explores the effects that misogynistic lyrics have on music listeners. In order to do so, after a thorough review of the existing literature, a set of semi-structured interviews were carried out with participants aged 18 and over. The findings were then thematically analysed to generate 4 themes: contextual use, gendered power dynamics, the impact on women and music, its industry and their influence. The conclusion was that there has been a normalization of misogynistic language which the music industry and its artists have contributed to, and that this normalization is detrimental to women’s freedom, humanity and self-esteem. Furthermore, the use of such language reinforces traditional gender power dynamics and female subordination which poses a structural problem where misogyny has become the norm. Due to a gap in the literature on this topic, this study, despite being a small-scale qualitative study, provides some insightful information on the effects of misogynistic lyrics on music listeners.
